Patriot Day 2022

Patriot Day 2022

Sunday, September 11th, 2022 marks the 21 year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks carried out against the United States on the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in suburban Pennsylvania. Patriot Day serves as a remembrance of the lives lost on that September morning, and subsequently from exposure to dust and toxins at Ground Zero. At Point One, we recognize, additionally, more lives affected from the attack that day, as a company borne from the time many, then active-duty military, service members gave to our country.

2,977 people were killed, more than 25,000 others were injured. Of the 2,977 fatal victims, 2,753 were killed in the World Trade Center and the surrounding area, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 in Pennsylvania. These deaths included 265 on the four planes, 343 members of the New York City Fire Department and 71 law enforcement officers who died in the World Trade Center and on the ground in New York City; a United States Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Law Enforcement officer who died when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania; 55 military personnel who died at the Pentagon.

In 2013, it was reported that 1,140 responders and people who worked, lived or studied in lower Manhattan had been certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to have a WTC-related cancer. Additionally, “as many as 65,000 people, including first responders, who got sick from 9/11 exposure are part of a WTC medical monitoring and treatment program in the New York metro area and in clinics around the country.”

A post on September 9, 2020 reports that “more than 2,000 responders and Ground Zero workers have died since from illnesses many attributed to their time at the site.”

7,057 service members killed in post-9/11 war operations, and a staggering estimate of 30,177 active duty personnel and veterans of the post 9/11 wars have died by suicide, according to a Brown University and Boston University research paper.

This Patriot Day 2022, we honor and remember the 9/11 victims, the civilians, brave first responders who rushed into action on that morning in 2001, and also the many still dealing with the physical/ medical impacts from that day, the service members who fought in the Global War on Terror, and those who continue to fight either on the front lines abroad in service to our country, or at home, dealing with the mental/emotional toll a war of 20+ years takes. We honor and remember the 2,977 who were killed, the 2000+ responders and Ground Zero workers dead from illnesses (with many attributed to the site), the 7,057 service members killed in post-9/11 war operations + 30,177 active duty personnel and veterans of the post 9/11 wars fallen by suicide.

Interested organizations and individuals, if you have not already done so for the death of Queen Elizabeth II as a sign of respect, join us in lowering the flag to half-staff, and/or observing a moment of silence on Patriot Day in honor of the individuals who lost, and many gave, their lives, and those dealing with the effects, as a result of the terrorist attacks against the United States that occurred on September 11, 2001.

We must never forget the profound toll taken that day and the yet enduring cost we continue to pay as time marches. Even as the sacrifice continues to grow, our national spirit and remembrance of those lost can help us all move forward with hope, confidence and a determination to defend our future.
